Plastic Bag Haters Out in Force Again

Suffocating us with govt
Here we go again. And once again I say: if you don’t like plastic bags don’t use them. But the enviros who brought us the plastic bag due to their tree worship and who brought us the worse version of it–the RECYCLED plastic bag, won’t say they’re sorry and just leave us alone. No, they want them gone. Again. They’re holding a news conference today to tell us about the overwhelming number of people (I’m sure) who want less choice and think the government is just the racket to get their fondest wishes accomplished. But, what ho! The facts are not on their side:

The last time this was tried, in the legislature by Mark Hass, we embarrassed them by facts and logic. Let’s see if we can do it again.

From my previous blog posts here, here, here, here and here.
From one of my previous posts about the last attempt at a ban/tax. Make sure you see the list of Oregon companies that would be wiped out with a ban (see below).

Thanks to our friends at www.SavethePlasticBag.com for their wonderful insights. It’s been wonderful to have them as a partner in pushing back these bans. I forgot to credit them before but it’s because I had just spoken to them on the air.

  • Senator Hass today in Salem claimed Oregon’s plastic bag industry uses 150,000 barrels of oil to create plastic grocery bags. The folks who actually  make plastic grocery bags say the bags are made from “ethane which is a waste product from domestically produced natural gas. If the ethane is not used to make plastic bags, it will have to be burned off.”
  • Senator Hass said that sea turtles and sea mammals eat plastic bags, but the folks who have actually investigated this say the sea turtle pictured (see nearby) is the only case in which this has been alleged. Sea mammals HAVE been pictured, however, eating plastic “netting,” not plastic bags.
  • Senator Hass said that nobody recycles plastic bags, but considering plastic grocery bags are made from recycled materials also and can be returned to the store to be further recycled, that hardly seems like a logical argument.
  • Senator Hass said today that plastic bags don’t decompose. That is true. But they also sequester carbon. Paper bags emit methane when they decompose.
  • Senator Hass said plastic bags clog up land fills. That’s what land fills are for: waste. Plastic bags take up a wee spot. 0.4% of landfills are plastic bags.
And that’s just for openers.
What about the potential for killing jobs in Oregon? Here are some of companies in Oregon that make plastic bags. A couple you’ll see don’t make “grocery” bags but other kinds. One makes bags for the international market. All have been hurt by misguided plastic bag bans.

We know you folks want to live in Utopia, but even folks in Utopia will have to work. Here’s my previous list of companies that would be hurt with a plastic bag ban or tax:
